Preventive drugs such as selamectin, ivermectin, and moxidectin are also used to treat dogs with microfilariae. These drugs contain macrocyclic lactone anthelmintic, an active ingredient but unlike microfilaricide, they are not sanctioned by the FDA. Veterinarians usually use these non-FDA approved to kill microfilariae in dogs because there are none FDA-approved drugs available for eliminating microfilariae.

Heartworm disease is one the favorite dog health questions. According to studies in all 50 states in the United States, heartworm infection affects all dogs in spite of their sex, age, and habitat. Dogs that are not treated have the highest incidence of infection. In areas from the Gulf of Mexico to New Jersey, the risk of infection can be as high as 45%. Other some areas report rates of 5% and below for this canine disease.
